5 reasons Microsoft can’t afford to lose 2018

I own an Xbox One. Actually I own a box that is branded Xbox One. Where are the games? Yes the internals are impressive and the frames per second are a vast improvement but still not quite at Playstation 4 quality. But it’s close enough that there should be a real competition for owning BOTH machines. But yet……no compelling games. There are 5 reasons for this.

1. Microsoft keeps closing its internal studios
Engaget reports that Microsoft has closed several internal studios. This is crazy. With few studios writing for them the only option they have is to go shopping.
2. Acquisition pickings are slim.
EA is an option, but EA has their own management issues right now. There has been a revolving door of executive leadership. Coupled with brands that not only compete in the marketplace but also internally for resources. And it doesn’t appear there is a compelling vision at the company. Normally this makes for a great target. But Microsoft doesn’t have 3 years to solve this issue.
3. Microsoft needs a quick development that’s a hit. Can you say Overwatch?
Overwatch has been a phenomenal hit on the platform. Where Microsoft could add quick value is by selling plug ins that expand the universe. It could also change its model….
4. Offer amateur and semipro leagues with real prizes!
Not only does this get people playing intensely the few products that are working out for Microsoft but it could encourage the console to be used for E- league entertainment as well. Think World Series of Poker but for gaming. Microsoft could put up real prize money and offer mini qualifying tourneys to focus eyeballs. But….
5. None of this matters without good content.
Microsoft Design either needs to deliver a lot of good content in 2018 or expand what the Console can do in 2018 to make up for it. Maybe open the environment to PC games or make it more backwards compatible.
But in the end Microsoft needs to do something. Anything to resolve this issue. The games ideally should be 4k quality with great story lines for older players like me. But as I type this, I am looking at my 8 year old son. He could care less about story or graphics. He just wants dad to buy him a cheap game during break. Surely they make a bunch of games for kids on the cheap!!But complacency is not an option in 2018.
